The big news in the soccer world is Qatar is hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup—and the good news for soccer fans of all ages around the world is Qatar is an ideal place for family vacations. It’s safe, there’s plenty to do, and the locals are very friendly. This is the first time the World Cup is being held in an Arab country. Few people know much about this small Middle Eastern Country, and that’s about to change. Qatar is expecting 1.2 million visitors and a lot of construction is going on (new hotels, new stadiums, and plenty of new activities).

What to See in Qatar

Museum of Islamic Art

Built by famed architect I. M. Pei who came out of retirement at age 91 for this project, the Museum of Islamic Art is on an island near the dhow harbor. The MIA represents Islamic art from three continents over 1,400 years. 
    

Camel racing

One of the biggest sports in the Middle East, the Al Shahaniya racing track, north of Doha, attracts passionate crowds of citizens, tourists, and dignitaries. Contestants fight for expensive prizes including the Golden Sword. Kids will especially love be be in the stands for these races.
 



Dhow cruise

Take in the skyline of the always-expanding city of Doha aboard a traditional Qatari dhow boat. Sunset is the best time to go.
  

Qatar National Library

Just opened in 2018, this is one of the largest, most high-tech libraries in the world. In addition to full-text online resources, the Qatar National Library currently has more than 1 million books in its collections, along with more than 500,000 e-books, periodicals and newspapers, and special collections.
 

Al Shaqab Royal Stables  

Visit with Arabian horses at the Al Shaqab Royal Stables and learn about the tradition of this equestrian breed that has been handed down in Qatar from generation to generation.
   

Dune Bashing at Khor Al Adaid

Go on a desert safari where the sand meets the Arabian Sea and explore the dunes via 4x4 vehicle. Then have a picnic in the sand before swimming in the warm waters of the Arabian Sea.
  

Souq Waqif

Explore one of the most authentic souqs in the Middle East. You can buy everything from beautiful handmade scarves and clothes, to unique glass baubles and local food snacks.
