On Friday, Sept. 20, Ean Gensler, M.Ed., director of Bright Horizons at Hudson Yards, will lead a free online parenting seminar about emergent curriculum in early childhood education and how it benefits young children. The Momcast, called "Teach Me at My Own Pace: How Emergent Curriculum Benefits Your Child," will be hosted by Mommybites, a go-to parenting community for resources, support, education, and mom-generated nanny job boards.

Teachers who follow an emergent curriculum approach to early childhood learning plan activities and class projects based on the children in the classroom, taking their skills, needs, and interests into account. The learning environment is thoughtfully planned, offering a variety of choices, and the teachers plan lessons based on observing the children.

In this Momcast, Gensler, who has 15 years of experience in early childhood development, will discuss the following topics relating to emergent curriculum:

  • How a planned learning environment establishes the foundation for learning throughout the day
  • How emergent curriculum encompasses planned activities, projects, and adaptations to the learning centers and stations, as well as guided interactions between teachers and children
  • How the curriculum emerges from the children—teachers plan learning experiences based on observations of the children’s interests, skills, and understanding—not based on a set plan of teacher-derived assumptions or themes
  • How teachers guide the children’s experience with the help of parents through the development of projects and planning activities that correspond with their developmental characteristics and their expressed interests?

This Momcast will be held Friday, Sept. 20, from 12-1pm. Register today for free at eventbrite.com. And if you want to learn about emergent curriculum but aren’t sure you can make it, everyone who registers will receive a link to the recorded Momcast.
