Musicians play the spoons, fiddle, and guitar while guests dance.   Planning a Fourth of July staycation? Head over to Van Cortlandt Manor or Washington Irving's Sunnyside. Both sites have planned a day of events chock full of history, live entertainment, and activities to celebrate our nation's independence.

The day kicks off in both locations with a re-enactment of the military setting up camp, where families learn how to get the fire started using flint and steel. Then, be sure to check out all of the entertainment, including storytelling, a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence, 18th-century fiddle music, dancing, patriotic songs, town ball games, and performances by comedic juggler Will Shaw. See demonstrations ranging from making old-fashioned ice cream to drilling and mustering, and take tours of the historic sites on the grounds.

In addition, Van Cortlandt Manor will host an afternoon parade, where kids are invited to march around the manor and participate in a final ceremony filled with singing, dancing, and games. Sunnyside will have comic performances featuring toasts to the republic and debates about the pros and cons of temperance and women's suffrage.
