Lutheran High School's 55th Commencement Ceremony

The 55th Long Island Lutheran (LuHi) Commencement Ceremony took place on June 9 in the Visscher Gymnasium. Mr. John Buck, newly named head of school, along with faculty and staff welcomed family and friends of the 119 graduates. The Class of 2018 chose their teacher Mr. Anthony Colanglo as this year’s commencement speaker.

He reminded graduates, “It is the countless NOs that makes the one YES sweet.” He went on to say, "We are born with two innate fears...the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises, all other fears are learned. Therefore, they can be unlearned.”

Valedictorian Younghyun “Hannah” Yoon, who came to LuHi from Korea, spoke about her experience coming to a new county, living without her parents, and learning how to adapt to a completely new culture. She thanked her teachers and friends for making her time at LuHi so special and credits them for helping her reach her goals. This fall, Hannah will be attending Vanderbuilt University.

Salutatorian Tony Wen, an international student from China, spoke about coming to the United States and how LuHi became his family. He shared how he learned about faith, love, and compassion through chapels, retreats, and interactions between students.

“Your actions showed me that there is something more than myself and taught me the joy of working for a greater cause,” says Tony.

Tony will go on to attend Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall.

The highest award presented at Lutheran High School, the Pro Deo et Schola Award, is presented to the senior boy and girl who have demonstrated Christian leadership and positively influenced student activities. Robert Prevete of Plainview and Yeaye Stemn of Baldwin were honored for exemplifying Christian life in school and their communities and gave the closing prayer for the graduation ceremonies.

Congratulations to LuHi’s Class of 2018 as they expand their horizons this fall in the freshman classes at Cornell University, University of Connecticut, Northeastern University, New York University, George Washington University, Princeton University, United States Naval Academy, Binghamton University, Virginia Tech, University of California, amongst many other fine state and private schools.
