Venue Description: Since opening in 1930, the Westchester County Center has been hosting concerts, theatrical performances, sporting events, trade shows, meetings, seminars, conventions, and other civic and community events. Throughout the years, such notable musical acts as James Brown, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Kenny Rogers, and John Sebastian have performed there, as have the Harlem Globetrotters and the Royal Hanneford Circus.
Conceived in 1924 by the Westchester Recreation Commission, the center was created to serve as a multi-purpose indoor center that would double as a venue for commercial events and community programs. Construction of the Art Deco building designed by the renowned architectural firm Walker and Gillette took nearly six years and $785,000 to complete. Thousands of people came to the center's grand opening gala, which featured the likes of Metropolitan Opera Company tenor Edward Johnson, pianist Percy Grainger, organist Palmer Christian, and more than 1,500 local choral group performers.
The historical building underwent $16 million worth of renovations in 1988, and is now a world class, state-of-the-art facility able to accommodate a multitude of events. Car shows, boxing and wrestling matches, music festivals, circuses, and conventions are frequently held at the center, along with regular community programs like open gym and music workshops. The center can be rented out for private events like reunions, award ceremonies, and birthday parties.
The Westchester County Center is located at 198 Central Ave. in White Plains and is open year-round, with dates and times varying from day to day. Tickets can be purchased at the box office or through Ticketmaster. Box office hours are Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm, Saturday 9am-4pm and one hour after the beginning of the event. Children younger than 2 do not need a ticket for most events, as long as they sit on a lap. For a specific schedule and fees, call 914-995-4050 or visit countycenter.biz.
